Opportunities for scholars at risk

As a research and teaching institution, the University of Bayreuth is particularly interested in promoting research opportunities. For this reason, the University has created offerings for international scholars who are threatened by war or persecution in their home countries. The University of Bayreuth is part of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative and is a founding member of Germany's Scholars at Risk network.

Cooperation with the Philipp Schwartz InitiativeHide

Protecting international scholars who are at risk in their home countries due to war or persecution and giving them research opportunities in Germany is the aim of this new initiative recently launched by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in cooperation with Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. It was named after Philipp Schwartz, a pathologist of Jewish descent who fled to Switzerland from Nazi Germany and founded the Notgemeinschaft deutscher Wissenschaftler im Ausland (Emergency Association of German Science).

In the first round of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, a total of 38 research and higher education institutions submitted applications to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to accept one or more scholars at risk and integrate them into their own research projects. The University of Bayreuth was among the 18 winning institutions for their proposal on giving an African researcher the opportunity to apply her social science expertise in Bayreuth by joining a project in the field of African studies.
